Poem – Her Broken Self

Her Broken Self

She stands there
Staring in the mirror
And she tries
To find something,
Anything,
That she likes about herself.
She fails at this.
Her broken self
Is her broken self-esteem.
The voice in her head whisper
That she is always second best,
And she is doing her best
To love herself
After a lifetime
Of never feeling good enough.

Her Broken Self is from my book, Because I Am Awake (published Oct. 2019). I can’t remember if I wrote this piece specifically for that book or if it was one I wrote earlier on. It’s very self-reflective. There are still days I can’t look in the mirror (and days I actively avoid looking at mirrors). It’s not easy to love myself and I have good days and bad, but I’m getting there. ❤
